Battling the Old Nature of sin requires faith in Christ
One of the most difficult battles we will fight in our Christian lives is the fight against our old nature. The struggle between our old nature and our new nature as Christians , who we were and who we become in Christ, is one we will spend much time fighting. The new nature given to us is in a constant fight against who we once were.
Joshua 11: 4-8, “And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel. And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.”
Just as an alcoholic must fight against the desire to take a drink, we are to fight against the desires of our old nature. We must learn to master it and not let our old nature dominate our lives.
Galatians 5: 17, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
In the verses above we see Joshua leading an army against the enemies of Israel. He was headed to the city of Merom where several different groups had lined up against him.
We can see this city as an example of our old nature. As Joshua took “ALL of the people of war with him” we must fight with everything we have against our old nature. The Lord has promised to deliver us but we must still fight.
Has the Lord Jesus saved you? Then get ready for the battle. Fight your old nature with prayer and Bible study. Resist every aspect of your old nature and trust the Lord to help you.
Please take a moment to remember someone who is lost.
