God will humble prideful people
The sin of pride leads people to falsely believe in their own abilities instead of relying on God’s grace and provision for their lives. God will humble prideful people and prideful nations by exposing their spiritual corruption, making them an example and a warning for others. The most prideful people are the ones at greatest risk.
Obadiah 3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
Proverbs 16: 18, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
We have nothing to bring before God to offer for a ransom of our souls. It is God who has laid the foundations of the earth and formed us in our mother’s womb. The things that man considers to be the measurement of wealth in this life were all created by Him.
Looking to the world around us we can easily see many proofs showing that God will humble prideful people. There are no riches of this world that cannot be lost. We see evidence of this every day in bankruptcy courts where you can lose everything you own. The loss of a job results in the loss of your income and the ability to pay the bills.
If you have physical strength, look to the frail and elderly. The strongest of men will be brought to weakness one day as he ages. Proverbs 11: 2, “When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom'”
Possibly one of the best explanations of pride was given by an old Baptist preacher named Charles Spurgeon. His warnings about pride should resonate with all of us.
“Pride is so natural to fallen man that it springs up in his heart like weeds in a well-watered garden … its every touch is evil. You may hunt down this fox, and think you have destroyed it, and lo! Your very exultation is pride. None have more pride than those who dream that they have none. Pride is a sin with a thousand lives; it seems impossible to kill it.”-Charles Spurgeon
Everyone will stand before God to give an account for the life we lived here on this earth. There is nothing in our life that we’ve done or that we own that will impress the Lord. The only redemption we have on Judgement Day is if we’ve trusted in Jesus Christ and turned to Him in repentance.
