Two Shall Be One Flesh in Marriage

A man and a woman joined together in marriage are together a new creation. God intended marriage of a man and a woman to be the foundation of society. The man and the woman are no longer individuals in a marriage but two shall be one flesh.

Genesis 2: 21-24, “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;  And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Numbers 30: 2, “If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.”

Mathew 5: 31-32, “It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:  But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.”

Many studies put the divorce rate around 50% within the United States.  It is a sad number for our country since each person affected in a divorce isn’t just a statistic.  These numbers are real people and often those people have children who are affected as well.

Marriage between one man and one woman was the first institution created by God upon this earth.  It is no surprise that satan wants to destroy it.   People today do not take their marriage vows as seriously as they should.  And now more than ever, this nation has many social problems as a result.  Studies show overwhelmingly that children from homes with both parents do better in school, and have overall better success in a career and life in general.

They shall be one flesh.  That part of the verses above should be studied very carefully.  It highlights just how God sees a husband and wife, as one flesh.  We have forgotten God’s standards of taking a vow, and what is worse is that many pulpits remain silent on this issue.  It is the issue of sin that causes divorce and many other ills of society.

The tools used by satan to destroy marriage include selfishness and lustful desires.  We see the grass as greener on the other side of the fence but often learn the hard way it isn’t.  Just as the fruit our greatest of grandparents tasted was sweet so is sin for a few moments.  But the end is very bitter.

In today’s society, many argue that marriage is of little importance.  However, the facts do not support what they believe.  God’s word still holds true.  A strong family structure within a nation results in more stability for everything else.  This fact is proven in history.

During the earliest period of this country, many of the early colonies failed, often very disastrously.  Later settlements had much more success.  According to historians Dr. Alan Brinkley –author of The Unfinished Nation- and Dr. Glen Lafantasie –author of Heroes of Gettysburg- one of the main contributors to the success of later colonies was the fact that many families immigrated together.  That family structure helped give stability to the colonies.

Without a solid family structure, our nation as a whole suffers.  Children go into a world of chaos each day when they leave home.  Unfortunately, there is just as much chaos in the home they leave in the morning as there is in the rest of the world.

If there is no stability within the home there will be no stability in any part of our lives.  It takes three to make a good marriage.  First of all, it takes God, then one man and one woman.  When two people are devoted to the Lord they will draw closer to each other as they draw closer to Him.
