Salvation is complete dependence on Jesus Christ

The salvation of our souls is completely dependent on the finished work of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that God has concluded all of us guilty of breaking His law, and there is a penalty that must be paid. The Lord paid the penalty for our sins, and there is nothing we can add to His finished work.

“All the pain that God asks, Christ has suffered; all the satisfaction by way of agony in the flesh that the law demandeth, Christ hath already endured. “It is finished!” – Charles Spurgeon

Galatians 3: 22, “But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.”

Years ago as a young Christian, I was constantly beating myself up each time I felt I couldn’t live up to God’s expectations. I would try each day to keep His commandments and each day I would fail in one way or another.

I have a sticker of the Ten Commandments in a toolbox I used for work at that time and would regularly read them along with some of the others I had. One day, while I was again feeling guilty about how I failed in keeping the Lord’s Word, I came to the realization that it would be impossible for me to keep it continually.

It was at that point that the Lord reminded me this “by grace are ye saved, and that not of yourselves.” The Lord completed the work and there is nothing anyone of us can add to it.

Isaiah 64:6-7, But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;

When we try to add to the Lord’s Work, we will fail. We are to depend completely on Him as our Savior.

The Christian will make many mistakes in this life after they are saved but they cannot continue to live in them for very long. Just as the prodigal son, the Christian will one day turn from the filthy pig pen and run back to his Father.

As Christians, we often fail to remember the words spoken by the Lord while on the cross, “IT IS FINISHED!”
