Jesus Christ is The Bread of Life
The Lord provides His people with the Bread of Life to sustain us in times of difficulty when we cannot provide for ourselves. When the children of Israel were wondering in the wilderness they had no way to sustain themselves. They didn’t have gardens to harvest food. There were no grocery stores where they could buy food or restaurants they could visit either.
John 6: 48-51, “I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
The children of Israel depended completely upon God to supply their needs. They depended upon the daily supply of manna from Heaven in order to live. They clearly knew that without God supplying them with daily manna they would die.
In the verses above, the Lord Jesus clearly shows us that we are to depend upon Him just as the children of Israel depended upon their supply of daily bread. Without the Lord, we have no hope just as without daily bread the children of Israel would perish. But there is more for us to discover in these verses.
Even though the Lord provided daily bread for the children of Israel, they still died. This bread was a temporary supply to sustain their earthly bodies. The True Bread that sustains us spiritually as well as in this world is Jesus Christ.
It was also the responsibility of every one of them to go daily to retrieve the bread the Lord gave them. As Christians, it is our responsibility to seek the Lord daily in our own lives. No one in Israel could get the bread and take it to another. They each had to get their own. No one can seek the Lord for us. Instead, it is something we have to do for ourselves.
