Has the Church Gone Silent? Why Modern Christians Are Tolerating Evil in the Name of Love

The Bible is clear that the early church was not known for tolerating evil and there are many examples of it within the pages of the New Testament. We know that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church about their lack of action in dealing with a member who committed an abominable sin. The church quickly corrected their error and through the act of church discipline, the brother repented.

Christians today tolerate evil and false doctrine at a level unimaginable decades ago. Within the New Testament, we read of the Lord Jesus praising one of His churches because they would not tolerate evil at all and would also not tolerate false teachers.

Revelation 2: 1-3,”Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.”

The church has an obligation to stand against evil and false doctrine. Unfortunately today, we have not only become too tolerant of it, some so called churches even promote it and call it “loving people.” The church of the Living God needs to call out these false doctrines because you cannot truly love someone if you are “loving them” into God’s wrath. Instead, we are to warn them that we have a Holy God who will judge sin.

As Christians, we want to live a peaceful life and speaking out can easily cause that peace to be replaced with criticism and conflict. We don’t like being criticized or questioned about our beliefs and we let people slip into eternity without warning them of what’s to come.

Remaining silent in the face of evil for the purpose of simply trying to keep the peace has gotten to the point that people are literally parading abomination down the public streets. Those who commit such things are now openly targeting those who they know don’t accept their lifestyle and they have gone as far as to interrupt church services in some parts of the country.

False doctrines are easily brought into the church because people simply don’t read and study their Bible. It’s harder to lie to someone who already knows the truth. We see from the verses above that the Ephesians questioned those who came to them and refused to accept false apostles or their teachings.

The time for tolerating evil by the church needs to end and the Christian needs to stand for the Truth of God’s Word. We are to love those who are truly in need and warn those who live in sin. We have a Loving God who holds His hands out to the sinful world and offers grace through Jesus Christ. But He is also a Holy God who will not tolerate sin.

A Christian is nothing more than a sinner saved by God’s Grace through faith in Jesus Christ. True faith in Jesus Christ will bring the lost soul to repentance.
